Cyprus welcomes the agreement reached at the 7th meeting of the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 7) on a draft mandatory measures to reduce the carbon intensity of ships.
These measures will be examined by the forthcoming Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 75) in the of form of proposed amendments to the MARPOL Convention, including a combination of both technical and operational measures. This is another positive step along the path to decarbonize shipping and a building block on the implementation of IMOs Initial GHG Strategy.
Cyprus strongly supports IMO efforts in achieving a global level playing-field and a fair working environment for maritime transport, by defining and implementing internationally agreed, evidence-based rules and standards for competitive, safe, secure, efficient and environmentally sustainable shipping. Last week’s deliberations demonstrated IMO’s commitment towards achieving its targets for emission reductions from shipping.
